Good morning.
We have just witnessed the 22nd Commonwealth Games - 28 July to 8 August. Sports men and women competed multiple sporting codes, each with one aim in mind - to perform at his/her best.
It was particularly gratifying to watch the medium and long distance runners. It was a test of their endurance. Varying tacticts were applied throughout each race. Each athlete wanting to finish strong.
The writer of Hebrews could have been writing to these athletes when he said: "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us" (Hebrews 12:1)
For us followers of Christ we too run the race marked out for each of us. We, like the athletes, need to practice and train ourselves with the discipline required to be effective. Paul puts it this way when he says, "Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly ... " (1 Corinthians 9:26)
May our attitude be the same as that of Paul: "I wanted to be sure I was not running and had not been running my race in vain." (Galatians 2:2)
Blessings.
Mike and Daphne
